Cantik Itu Luka by Eka Kurniawan

This novel, whose title translates to Beauty is a Wound, delves into the drama, tragedy, and pain associated with beauty, particularly for women living in a world where beauty can lead to exploitation and sexualization, especially during Indonesia's colonial era. In one sentence, this story encapsulates the painful reality of beauty.
Cantik Itu Luka unfolds in Indonesia during Dutch and later Japanese colonization. It begins with the resurrection of Dewi Ayu, who had died 20 years earlier after giving birth to her fourth daughter, instilling fear in her village. Her first three daughters were all exceptionally beautiful, resembling mannequins, but this daughter was different: she had skin as dark as coal and a nose like a pig’s. Ironically, Dewi Ayu named her Cantik, which means "Beauty" in Indonesian.
Dewi Ayu’s backstory reveals her remarkable bravery and resilience. When she was young, she was captured by Japanese soldiers, sacrificing her virginity to help a friend in need. This part of the story sends shivers down my spine. As Dewi Ayu ends up as a prostitute in a luxurious house on an island, her bravery and strength shine through. In Indonesian society, a woman who loses her virginity is often perceived as immoral, but Dewi Ayu challenges this stereotype.
This novel may be challenging to read as it vividly portrays the pain and suffering experienced by many Indonesian and Southeast Asian women, whose virginity is often regarded as their most prized possession yet is pursued recklessly by men. What resonates with me is Dewi Ayu's unwavering openness and bravery in sacrificing her virginity to protect others. Her courage in defying societal expectations and refusing to be defined by others' opinions is truly inspiring.
The essence of this novel is to emphasize that each person holds ownership over their own choices and experiences. Dewi Ayu's story challenges the notion that virginity should be held above all else and encourages us to reevaluate societal norms and expectations surrounding it. Ultimately, it underscores the importance of individual agency and the power of resilience in the face of societal pressures.
